Defensin peptides are essential members of host-defense antimicrobial peptides. These cationic peptides are originally produced by vertebrates, insects and higher plants. Host defense peptides are involved in the protection against different kind of pathogens like bacteria, fungi and several viruses and play an important role in inflammation and wound repair. Antitumor activity of dedicated antimicrobial peptides is described in combination with non-immunogenic tumor antigens. The human defensin group is composed of two subclasses: Peptanova offers six different alpha-Defensin peptides (HNP; HD) and four beta-Defensin peptides (hBD), which are characterized by their distinct arrangement of three disulfide bonds.
