Guanylin and Uroguanylin are intestinal hormones and potent activators for membrane guanylate cyclase. Both peptides control salt and water transport by stimulation of guanylin / uroguanylin receptors in the kidney. The mechanism of activating CFTR-chloride channels by Guanylin has been described in many organ systems. Due to their important role in Na+ and K+ excretion, guanylin and uroguanylin are close related to the broad family of natriuretic peptides.
